# Installation

> Add Masque to a Rust project, and get Skia building on your platform.

> **Pre-release.** Masque is not on crates.io yet. Until it is, depend on the Git repository. TODO: the published crate name is undecided.

## Requirements

- Rust 1.80 or newer.
- A platform that `skia-safe` supports. Masque's Skia backend builds with the `vulkan` and `textlayout` features.

## Add the crate

```toml
[dependencies]
masque = { git = "https://github.com/fian-team/masque" }
```

Once Masque is published, this becomes:

```sh
cargo add masque
```

## The first build is slow

`skia-safe` downloads a prebuilt Skia binary for your target where one exists, and otherwise compiles Skia from source. A source build takes a long time and needs Python, Ninja and a C++ toolchain. If your first build seems stuck, this is almost always why.

TODO: per-platform notes (Linux packages, macOS, Windows) and the `SKIA_BINARIES_URL` offline path.

## Editor support

Install the language server and the VS Code extension now, so your first document has diagnostics from the start. See [Editor support](/docs/tooling/editors).
